5 reasons why Alexis should be EPL player of the year

EPL By: Okanga Okanga | 24/02/2017

The Arsenal man has, arguably, been the standout star performer in the league this season and has, more than anyone else so far, shown reasons why his consistency should be rewarded with the best player recognition.

6 reasons why Arsenal should make Jardim their next manager

Apart from Victor Moses at Chelsea, no player has excelled better in an adapted position than Alexis Sanchez this season. The Chilean has had to play centre-forward for his club and has done it like a veteran, making life unbearable for the league's center-backs. Alexis sits at the top of the scoring charts this season with 17 goals. This is quite a feat considering the competition: Diego Costa, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sergio Aguero, Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane.

Leicester Sacking Ranieri Won't Be Football Crazy

Alexis is not only scoring goals. He is also creating them. His incredible vision, balance and dribbling abilities which are perhaps second only to Eden Hazard's, ensure that he is always able to beat people either with his footwork or his passing. He is second only to Kevin De Bruyne in terms of assists. He has registered 8 so far as against the Belgian's 9. Alexis is never lacking in positive play. He has played more through balls than any other player in the league this season (36). De Bruyne is only second on 23 so far. Alexis is able to create so much for others and still manage to take more shots than everyone else (except Zlatan Ibrahimovic) in the league: 91 to Ibra's 102.

Man City 5-3 Monaco must go down as one of the great nights

There is no more well-rounded player than Alexis Sanchez. His work-rate is immense; his fitness impeccable. Despite his role up front he still tracks back all the time to help out his team defensively. He can be seen covering and tackling even as late as the 90th minute. He is a quintessence of character and commitment.

Excelling despite playing in a disappointing team

Your team may sometimes drag you back no matter how good you are. Arsenal are not the worst team in the Premier League this season, by any means. Far from it. However, it is obvious that Alexis has been on a different level from the rest of his teammates including the other superstar Mesut Ozil. Even in matches where Arsenal have been really poor, Alexis has still managed to show his own character and tenacity. The only exception was the 3-1 drubbing at league leaders Chelsea.

Like Suarez/Bale

It is often the case that a player from a team that wins the league also wins the best player award. However, this is not always the case as sometimes players from less successful sides who show themselves to be exceptional take home the award. The most recent examples are Luiz Suarez and Gareth Bale whose Liverpool and Spurs side respectively failed to win the title. Alexis is definitely in that category of elite players from underperforming teams. It would be no surprise if he tows the Suarez-Bale route.
