Carles Puyol in Uyo

Oh, what an experience that Uyo fans had when the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour came into the city on Tuesday accompanied by Ambassador Carles Puyol.

Huge applause rent the air when the three-time winner and former Barcelona defender made his grand entrance into the Uyo International Stadium carrying aloft the UEFA Champions League Trophy for all to see.

Thousands of Akwa Ibom people who had never dreamt of seeing the Big Ears let out a gasp as they came face to face with the world famous football diadem on their own soil.

Puyol’s Chairman team went on to defeat the Shine Shine Bobo team of Austin JJ Okocha, Mutiu Adepoju, Austin Eguavoen, Uche Okechukwu and Daniel Amokachi in the novelty match.

Okocha scored a first-half free-kick that rolled back the years as the fans screamed in ecstasy.

“It was nice to see Okocha play again with his passes, and his free-kick was mad, it was amazing,” said one fan. “Puyol also showed that he’s still got it despite that age has caught up with him.

“It was quite it unbelievable seeing the Champions League Trophy. I thought it wasn’t going to come that it was going to be one of those stories. But I was pleasantly surprised. It was amazing seeing it here in Uyo.”

Another fan that came with his family told FCNaija.com about the delightful experience.

“Seeing JJ Okocha pull that magic again and again and seeing Puyol with his sliding tackles despite his age just made the encounter exciting for the fans. We cannot thank Heineken enough for making it possible for us to witness such entertainment here in Uyo,” he said.

After the game, several fans stayed back to enjoy the post-game party and also to watch the Champions League game between Barcelona and Manchester United on the giant screen erected in the fan zone inside the stadium.
