Arsenal 3-1 WSW: Giroud on target as Lacazette fires blank

Olivier Giroud scored his first pre-season goal on Saturday to help Arsenal to a comfortable 3-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in a friendly game while the Gunners' big money signing from Lyon Alexandre Lacazette fired blanks on his first start for the Emirates outfit.

Giroud, Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny all scored in the first half with Steven Lustica scoring for the minnows after the restart.

Most of the side that finished Thursday’s 2-0 win over Sydney FC started this match. That meant Elneny continued at the heart of a three-man defence - a new role for him. With Xhaka and Ramsey seemingly first choice in the centre of midfield.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, usually seen in central midfield or on the right was also in unfamiliar territory at left wing-back. Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny were back though, the latter making his first appearance since that red card in the final game of the Premier League season.

Giroud got Arsenal off to a flying start by firing into the roof of the net from close range. Aaron Ramsey then clipped over Vedran Janjetovic after racing onto a Nacho Monreal long pass to double the Gunners' advantage.

Mohamed Elneny rounded off an excellent first half by firing a deflected strike into the bottom corner.

An unusual string of events 12 minutes after the break saw Martinez pick up Ramsey's backpass to give away an indirect free-kick six yards from goal. Lustica's initial effort was blocked before he smashed home the rebound for 3-1.

Arsenal's pace dropped in the second half and Steven Lustica scored from close range at the second attempt after the Gunners were penalised for a backpass from Ramsey.

Arsene Wenger repeated his tactical approach from Thursday’s win over Sydney FC, replacing his goalkeeper at half-time and every outfield player after 66 minutes.

Mesut Ozil was one of the subs and he curled a free-kick against the post with six minutes left. Eddie Nketiah hit the same post even later.
