Arsenal vs Rennes: Team News, predictions & likely lineups

Europa League By: Ikponmwosa Umweni | 13/03/2019

Arsenal welcome French side Rennes in the second leg of their round of 16 ties in the Europa League on Thursday night at Emirate Stadium.

The Gunners slumped to a surprise 3-1 defeat in last week's first leg after seeing Sokratis Papastathopoulos sent off before half time and Unai Emery's men have it all to do as they seek to turn this tie on its head.

Arsenal, however, can take considerable comfort from their impressive home record with 2-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday was a fifth successive home victory and they have won five of their last seven Europa League ties on home soil.

Team News

Former PSG and Sevilla coach Emery must be tempted to field a similarly offensive line-up to the one defeat Manchester United but Gunners received a major boost on Tuesday evening with the news that Alexandre Lacazette will be available for the second leg after Uefa reduced his three-match suspension following an appeal.

Papastathopoulos, though, is suspended after being sent off in France last week, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan missed Sunday Premier League with a back problem but could return on Thursday.

However, Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding and Danny Welbeck remain long term absentees through injury.

For Rennes, right-back Romain Danze and midfielder Rafik Guitane remain unavailable after picking up injuries in October. There are no new concerns for the French side.

Head to Head

The two clubs met for the first time in the first leg which saw Rennes produce one of the most famous results in their history, beating the Gunners 3-1 and taking a healthy lead with them to North London.

Recent Form

Arsenal have gone an impressive five matches unbeaten in the Premier League, a run which has included a 1-1 away draw in the North London derby against Spurs and their impressive 2-0 win over Manchester United.

However, their loss last week to Rennes in the first leg of the round of 16 Europe League tie has meant Emery's men will need to put on a famous performance to progress in the competition.

Rennes are unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions and have not lost in the Europa League since the group stage back in November.

Predicted lineups Arsenal: Cech; Maitland-Niles, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal; Torreira, Xhaka, Ramsey; Ozil, Aubameyang, Lacazette.

Predicted lineups Arsenal: Rennes Koubek; Zeffane, Da Silva, Sitoe, Bensebaini; Sarr, Andre, Grenier; Ben Arfa, Bourigeaud, Hunou.

Score prediction: Arsenal 4-1 Rennes
