Barca star Messi edges Ronaldo to another record

Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi edges Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo to another record after winning the third straight Golden Shoe award on Wednesday afternoon.

The 32-year-old Argentina international scored 36 league goals in La Liga last season three more than his closest challenger Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe, who scored 33 in Ligue 1, and Sampdoria's Fabio Quagliarella, who netted 26 times in Italy's Serie A.

The FIFA Best Players of the Year who receives the award for the third successive season at the Antigua Fabrica Estrella Damm in Barcelona where he club teammate Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba were at the event including his two sons two Thiago and Mateo.

He dedicated the award to his family and colleagues he said: "I want to thank my family, the board and my teammates,

"Thanks especially to Luis and Jordi, who are two of the big reasons I have been able to win this sixth Golden Shoe.

"But even though I am here with the trophy, this is recognition for the whole dressing room. Thank you!"

Messi now has two more Golden Shoes than his great rival Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo has won it four times once with Manchester United and three times with Real Madrid but La Liga has now provided 14 of the last 15 winners but Suarez is one of nine players on two as the award was created in 1967 when it was won by Eusebio.

Barcelona return to action this weekend in La Liga with a trip to Eibar.
