Ahead of his side's last-16 opener against in-form Premier League leaders Manchester City in Switzerland on Tuesday, FC Basel head coach Raphael Wicky says his side would not be surprised by their visitors.

Basel have already enjoyed success against Manchester City's neighbours this season, but face a tall order if they are to win a round of 16 tie at the third attempt.

Wicky reveals he spent some time at Bayern when Guardiola was in charge as part of his UEFA licence education, but didn't have any direct contact with the now-City boss whose side are 'flawless'.

"I saw two or three first-team training sessions but didn't talk to Pep Guardiola.

"They basically have no weaknesses. Manchester City can change their game, they're flexible and can react to what their opponents do. They have quality, and their coach has shown his quality with Barcelona and Bayern too. They're an unbelievably strong team.

"I don’t think we'll be surprised by Man City tomorrow. Everyone knows how they play, and they'll have a lot of possession. They are incredibly quick in transitions.

"We have to be realistic, we're not going to have 50 or 60% possession. We must be incredibly solid, very compact, very focused in every second of the game. When we have the ball, we have to have the courage to use it.

"We always try to prepare a plan, and we have one for tomorrow. Everything has to go perfectly for us in every single aspect. We have to have a perfect evening to create a big surprise. As for tactics, I don't think it's the right place to talk about that." the Basel boss told

FC Basel 1893 and Manchester City FC have both found the UEFA Champions League round of 16 a sizeable obstacle in years gone by and will be eager to take a significant step towards progress when they meet for the first time at St. Jakob-Park.

While the visitors have lost three of their four last-16 ties – the exception coming in 2015/16, when Manuel Pellegrini's City went on to reach the semi-finals – Basel were beaten on their two previous appearances at this stage, in 2012 and 2015.
