Lionel Messi has been banned from Argentina’s World Cup first qualifying match for 2022 by the CONMEBOL.

The Argentine forward was subsequently fined $1,500 (£1,200) by South American soccer's governing body for his attitude against a Chilean defender Gary Medel in their third-place match.

Messi was shown a red card in the tournament after clashing with Medel who was also dismissed.

The South American football governing body made no reference to criticism made by Messi after he blasted the tournament of being corrupt and that Argentina had been harshly treated.

Messi later apologised to the organisation for his comments.
