Bristol City completed a shock by knocking champions Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 win.Joe Bryan opened scoring for Bristol after 51 minutes, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic leveled just minutes later. And with no more goals scored and with the game looking destined for extra time, Korey Smith scored to send Jose Mourinho’s men packing from the competition. It is safe to say the game started ‘bright and early’ as it didn’t take too long after kickoff for the first chance of the match to be recorded. As early as the seventh minute, it was Bristol who went close, when Josh Brownhill tried his luck from a long-range free kick and fired the ball to the roof of the net, but Sergio Romero was alert and thwarted the effort. The resulting corner kick caused no problems for the Red Devils, but five minutes later, it was Jose Mourinho’s side that went close, as Ibrahimovic, starting his first game for United since recovering from a knee injury, had a shot from inside the box, but it was deflected onto the post by one of the defenders.Marcus Rashford then went close on 21 minutes, when he latched onto a short pass just on the edge of the box took a shot, but his effort came off the right post. That was close! Bristol did do their best to put their noses in front, too, but the first half would end just the way it started. The restart had a slightly different complexion to it, as both sides appeared to have taken their feet off the pedal, with the game now going at a slower pace. But in the 51st minute, United would be jolted when Joe Bryan latched on to a precise pass inside the penalty box and produced a sweet strike that beat the goalkeeper as it went into the top right corner, bouncing off the post. The home side was in front. But the lead would not last too long as seven minutes later, Ibrahimovic scored from a free kick with a bullet of a strike that went into the bottom right corner. The goalkeeper couldn't react fast enough. United were level! And as the game progressed, there very few chances being created but with 18 minutes left of normal time, substitute Romelu Lukaku produced a ferocious strike from the edge of the box. His dangerous effort towards the bottom right corner was blocked by Luke Steele, who pulled off a superb save to keep the ball out of the net. What a save! But Bristol would smile last as in the fourth minute of added time, Korey Smith found some space inside the box to meet a beautiful cross and fired the ball inside the back of the net.The result means United are out from the competition they won last season.
