Costa puts paid to Wenger's hopes of exiting Arsenal on high

Former Chelsea forward Diego Costa put paid to Arsene Wenger's hopes of ending his Arsenal reign with a trophy on Thursday as Atletico Madrid won 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium with the Spaniard's lone strike securing a 2-1 aggregate in favour of the home side.

With the tie level after the first leg, Costa struck in first-half injury-time to secure victory for Atletico, who will face either RB Salzburg or Marseille in the final.

Arsenal fashioned a number of openings but the final pass was too often lacking as they were unable to breach Atletico's defence.

In what could be described as a sad end to the Wenger era, it was the same old story, a soft goal cost them. Then they couldn't get back in it and the final ball wasn't good enough - a scenario that has been the story under Wenger for many years now.

Arsenal switched off on the stroke of half-time and were punished by a familiar source - Diego Costa who latched on to an Antoine Griezmann sweeping pass to put the ball past the on-rushing David Ospina.
