Real Madrid new signing Mariano Diaz has explained why he chose Los Blancos iconic number 7 that was previously worn by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Diaz was re-signed from Lyon during the summer transfer period after Real Madrid exercise their buyback option to bring the Dominican Republic back to Santiago Bernabeu for a fee of €22 million (£20m).

Diaz was in great form for Lyon last season, scoring 21 goals in 45 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit.
Speaking on the choice of the shirt he chose at the Bernabeu, he said: ‘Yes, it weighs a lot. I was free, it’s a number I like and it’s a personal challenge. I am happy to be able to use a number used by Amancio, Juanito, Butragueño, Raul and Cristiano Ronaldo, of course,’ Mariano told Spanish radio show El Partidazo Cope. ‘Many told me I should not choose it, but I’m not thinking about it. I want to work hard to enjoy minutes.’
Mariano was an unused substitute in the 4-1 win over Leganes in their last La Liga match.
