Following the draw for the Russia 2018 World Cup which has pitted Nigeria against Croatia, Iceland and eternal rivals Argentina, former Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen believes Nigeria must beware of the two European sides in the group.

Speaking on SuperSport shortly after the draw ceremony, Eguavoen said: “It’s not a bad draw. But we must be careful of Iceland and Croatia.

“It’s good that we are seen as the underdogs of the group because this would help the team. But we must make sure we get the preparation right.”

Eguavoen, a former Nigeria international who played at the USA ’94 World Cup, also warned that despite beating Argentina recently in an international friendly, the South Americans must not be taken for granted.

“Argentina will not be easy for us. But the good thing is that we play them last in the group,” he said.

“So it’s very important that we win our first game of the group as that would give the team a lot of confidence going into the competition.”
