Newly promoted Premier League side Aston Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia gives Ivory Coast perfect start after a 1-0 win over South Africa in the ongoing 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nation on Monday evening at the Al Salam Stadium.

A boring game between former champions of African football as The Elephants are trying not to exit at the group stage like two years ago but they have to wait for Saint-Denis-born star after missing two opportunities before put away one in the 64 minutes

South Africa had the first chance of note shortly before the half-hour mark as Thulani Hlatshwayo headed just wide of the top-left corner, but Ivory Coast built momentum heading into half-time.

Liverpool transfer Nicolas Pepe hit the bar with a first-half free-kick before Ronwen Williams superbly saved from Kodjia at close range as the striker bore down on goal.

But Aston Villa striker capitalised on another opportunity in the 64 minutes when he was left completely unmarked inside the box after he received a through pass from former Bournemouth forward Max Gradel as Kodjia slot it home to give his the lead

The victory earns Ibrahima Kamara side three points the same with their matchday day opponent Morocco, while South Africa face Namibia.
