Michael Oliver has been officially appointed as the referee for the Emirates FA Cup final between Manchester United and Chelsea weeks after he was criticised for a penalty decision in a UEFA Champions League match.

Oliver recently courted controversy in the Real Madrid versus Juventus Champions League quarter-final when he awarded the defending Champions a late spot-kick that aided their progress to the semi-final.

UEFA came out in full support of the English official following his performance in the Champions League, and the governing body backed his decision making despite the numerous threatening messages he received on social networks.

On his appointment as the centre referee for the Wembley showdown next month, Oliver: "I felt very proud when I received the call.

"Officiating in an FA Cup final isn't something you can imagine when you start this career, but once you progress it becomes a goal.

"I know it will be a challenge." Oliver explained in an interview with the FA's official website

Manchester United and Chelsea booked their places at Wembley with victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton respectively.
