It was a history day for Manchester United Captain Wayne Rooney as he equaled the club’s all-time goalscoring record of 249 goals set by Sir Bobby Charlton in the 4-0 FA Cup third round win against Reading at Old Trafford.

A rampant Red Devils scored twice on each half with Rooney opening the goals account, Anthony Martial grabbing the second and Marcus Rashford wrapping it all up with a brace.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho gave a start to Captain Wayne Rooney who was passed fit for the game following two weeks on the sidelines due to injury while Bastian Schweinsteiger was only good enough for the bench.

Former Red Devils defender Jaap Stam who was returning to Old Trafford as a manager for Championship side Reading, put out his strongest side as in-form striker Yann Kermorgant led the attack.

First Half

The home side had an opening inside 30 seconds as Rooney fed Marcus Rashford who powered in a right foot shot from 20yards but it vies just off target.

Rooney got his chance from a pinpoint overhead pass from Marcos Rojo but his shot was well saved by former Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi.

It however, didn’t take long as Wayne Rooney opened the floodgates. The Manchester United Captain met a fine cross from Juan Mata and finished past the goalkeeper for his 249th goal for the club, equaling Sir Bobby Charlton as the Red Devils all-time topscorer.

United went on rampage from then on as Mata again provided a pass for Anthony Martial but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper. But the Reading goalkeeper had no answer for the Frenchman as he completed a one-two with Rooney before placing the ball beyond the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

Jose Mourinho was forced to make an early substitution as Marco Rojo went off injured and replaced by Phil Jones in the heart of defense.

At the other end, Reading’s Van den Berg found himself unmarked on the edge of the box but he volleyed his efforts wide off goal.

Manchester United nearly made it 3-0 as Marcos Rashford rounded-off the goalkeeper but his effort could only hit the side netting.

Second Half

Mourinho’s men started the half on the front foot like the first period and Wayne Rooney found himself free at the back post but could not make anything out of his header from Marcus Rashford’s cross.

Shortly after Ashley Young picked up a yellow card, Marouane Fellaini surged forward in a rare moment and his cross into the box cursed confusion as the goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi spilled the ball but recovered to make a smart save and deny Wayne Rooney his 250th United goal.

Sergio Rmero in goal for Manchester United made a vital block as he raced out of his line to deny Reading’s Gareth McCleary.

It was enough warning for the home side to put the game beyond the visitors as Marcus Rashford raced unto a defense splitting pass by Michael Carrick and slots the ball past the goalkeeper for 3-0.

The goal was followed by a double substitution as Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Bastian Schweinsteiger came on for Michael Carrick and Juan Mata.

A horror show followed shortly as the Reading keeper Al Habsi allowed a backpass from defender Liam Moore the ball run across his body and then completely miss kicked and Rashford pounced to score his second of the game.
