Amuneke chosen to select world best player nominees for 2018

Former Nigeria international and FIFA Technical Study Group member for the 2018 World Cup Emmanuel Amuneke says the Super Eagles and the other African teams at the tournament disappointed and there is an urgent need for them to lay emphasis on youth development so as to be more competitive.

The Eagles, Senegal, Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco all failed to go past the first round of 2018 just four years after Nigeria and Algeria advanced to the knockout rounds of the competition.

One-time CAF African Footballer of the Year Amuneke lamented that the African representatives failed to live up to high expectations in Russia.

“It was a disappointment for Africa after so much expectations that none of the teams progressed beyond the group stage,” he said.

“Football has changed and if we are not to continue to live on our dreams, we must change with these changes.

“I was coach of the Nigeria U17s and I know we have raw talents, but they need to be polished.

“We need to develop the game from the youth and grassroots levels so that the players could interprete the game better ad that way their decision making will be better.”
