Ghana will be determined to improve on a series of Africa Cup of Nations near-misses and can start out by beating Benin in their Group F opener on Tuesday at the Ismailia Stadium.

The Black Stars last lifted this trophy in 1982, but have reached two finals and four other semis in the past six renewals, so few would begrudge them an outright triumph.

It’s been four editions of the African Cup of Nations since Benin last featured in the tournament but The Squirrels would face a tough battle to progress to the next round of the 32nd edition.

Ghana Team News

Black Star have lost Leicester's Daniel Amartey to injury, while Jeffrey Schlupp of Crystal Palace wasn't included.

Benin Team News

Relegated Premier League side Huddersfield star Steve Mounié and Yeovil's Sessi D'Almeida both feature in The Squirrels squad.

Head to Head

Benin and Ghana have met each other on six occasions with Black Stars have succumbed to defeat on only one occasion, the match ending 1-0 in The Squirrels’ favour.

James Kwesi Appiah’s men have managed to win by four goals or more on two instances and their last encounter, which was in 2017, finished in a draw at 1-1.

Recent Form

Black Stars were not at their best in either of their previous two friendlies, which were against South Africa and Namibia, they are most likely to get down to business when they take on The Squirrels in their opening fixture.

Having finished fourth in the last edition of the Cup, their priority this time will be to finish at least a step higher.

Benin’s recent run of form has been decent, with a victory in their last two fixtures. Their run of form on the road, with regard to their last five away matches, however, is a little disappointing. The squad will have to put on much more solid performance if they are to indeed cause an upset in their opening fixture.

Predictions: Ghana 1-0 Benin
