How Uyo stood still for Puyol and the UCL Trophy

The queues were long and winding to enter the Uyo International Stadium on Tuesday after as fans turned up in their thousands to get a glimpse of the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour presented by Heineken.

The momentous occasion was also an opportunity for Uyo fans to see in living colour former Barcelona defender Carles Puyol play a novelty game against a side that consisted of former Nigeria Super Eagles players Austin JJ Okocha, Mutiu Adepoju, Austin Eguavoen, Uche Okechukwu and Daniel Amokachi.

As early as 12noon the gates of the Uyo Stadium had been thronged by fans who were keen to enter to see their football heroes.

Three-time Champions League winner Puyol had flown all the way from Spain to bring the Big Ears for fans to see and they were not going to miss the opportunity on offer.

Some of the fans that spoke to expressed their delight at the auspicious occasion that was offered to Uyo to be the host of such a prestigious game.

“I never believed that the Champions League Trophy would ever come to this part of the world but I am happy that it is here and I can’t wait to see it,” one fan said in excitement.

Another fan, a Barcelona supporter said he had come out because of Puyol. “I have been supporting Barcelona for the past 10 years and I feel excited to be able to see Puyol in my city,” he said.

A lady who was visiting the Uyo Stadium for the first time told that she was looking forward to seeing Okocha play in person.

The fans of Uyo definitely had a full experience of the Trophy Tour and the Unmissable game.

Puyol who will be in Lagos on Wednesday, will embark on a tour across the Centre of Excellence amongst several other encounters planned.

Nigerian football lovers will get a chance to meet and engage with Puyol and the trophy as fans in Uyo have, sharing banter and tips, habits and disciplines that helped distinguish his defense over the years and also build a successful career in FC Barcelona.
