It's Europa League over top four - Mourinho

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, says they would prefer Europa League over a top four finish.

Jose Mourinho has picked winning the Europa League over a top-four finish in the Premier League as they finally climbed above sixth place following their 3-1 win at Middlesbrough on Sunday.

The Red Devils are into the quarterfinals of the Europa League where they will face Anderlecht, with a real chance of winning the competition, which will guarantee them a place in the Champions League next season and they have also climbed out of the sixth position they have been since October in the Premier League.

And the United boss has picked his priorities, as he says a Europa League triumph will be preferable to a place in the top four, following the win at Middlesbrough.

“It was a big win to keep us alive in the race for fourth position. If we didn’t win this match, we lose the chance in relation to Arsenal’s defeat and Man City v Liverpool [who drew their third v fourth game later on Sunday]," he said.

“Do I prefer to finish fourth or win the Europa League? I prefer to win the Europa League because it gives us the same — Champions League football — but it also gives us a trophy, prestige, a European Super Cup [final against the Champions League's winners next August].

"Maybe we don’t win the Europa League and have to fight until we can to try for fourth. We missed many players but we had great attitude and desire from all the boys. It was a massive victory for us.”

Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard gave United a 2-0 lead, and Gestede pulled one back before Antonio Valencia was gifted a tap-in by keeper Victor Valdes’ slip.
