JUST IN: Former Chelsea star Costa receives eight-match ban

Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been banned for eight La Liga games for insulting and grabbing referee Jesus Gil Manzano during Atletico Madrid 2-0 defeat to Barcelona last weekend.

The 30-year-old Spain international saw red just 28 minutes into the league encounter at Camp Nou on April 6 and Brazil descent will miss the rest of the season, as Diego Simone side have just seven games left to play.

According to t Marca claims that Costa repeatedly insulted the Manzano's mother, for which he was given a four-match ban and another four was for were added to the ban because he grabbed the referee hand to prevent him from showing yellow cards to his team-mates.

The Premier League winner who has also been fined £5,200 will have no further opportunities in which to prove his worth this term.

Costa, who returned to Atletico from Chelsea in 2017, will finish the season with five goals in 21 games this season but he still have a contract through to 2021 at Wanda Metropolitano.
