Barcelona failed to extend their points advantage over Juventus as they were held to a goalless draw at the Allianz by Juventus.

The Italian champions went into the game on the back of a surprise loss in Serie A, but held their own in front of their fans as the game ended in a stalemate.

The Old Lady had the chance to either close the gap between them and Barca to just one point or risk going six points adrift, but on the evidence of the first minutes, it seemed the Italian champions would go for the former.

As early as the second minute, Douglas Costa had the chance to score a quick opener, when he got a chance around the Barca area, aimed for the middle of the goal, but his effort was easily saved by Marc Andre Ter-Stegen. That was a chance!

And as the game progressed, one interesting aspect was how Barcelona were controlling the game, but Juventus looked more dangerous and while there wasn’t quite a clear-cut chance like that of the second minute, but the Italian side were having more than enough small chances.

However, it would be time for the Catalonians to come in with their own chance, as in the 21st minute, Ivan Rakitic had a chance, when he tried his luck from a long-range free kick, but the effort came back off the right post.  Paulinho also went close, but his effort hit the crossbar and Barca would think they have had a lead going into the break.

The second half didn’t begin with any side getting an opportunity like Juve did in the first half, as the opening minutes of the second period showed both sides would apply a more cautious approach. That approach meant there was little between both sides at the restart.

But still, Barca continued to control the pace of the game, as Juve appeared comfortable to concede possession in order to maintain their shape. Ernesto Valverde’s side’s first real chance of the half did not come until the 69th minute, when Luis Suarez received a short pass from Lucas Digne, but the Juve’s defense was alive to its responsibility.

A glamorous fixture this was, but one could argue it barely lived up to its hype, as both sides failed to find the back of the net.

The result means Barca remain top of Group D, while Juventus remain second.
