Champions Juventus were left stunned as they suffered a rare home defeat to one of the form teams of the Serie A season, Lazio.
With so much expectation riding on the game, it didn’t disappoint from the start, as the capital club took the game to Juventus, as they looked dangerous at every turn. Juve on their part, did muster some opportunities going forward, and it paid off soon enough.
With only 23 minutes played, Douglas Costa received a fine pass inside the Lazio area, and the Brazilian wasted no time as he drilled his effort past the Lazio goalkeeper to give Juventus the lead. Despite Lazio’s fine start to the game, the goal looked like the champions would be on a stroll again.
And so it looked, as they even went close to doubling the lead just before half time, as Sami Khedira received a fine pass outside the box, but the Lazio goalkeeper pulled off an impressive save to keep his side in the game.
At the restart, Lazio continued to show they wouldn’t be intimidated by Juventus, as only two minutes into the second half, they were level. Ciro Immobile found time and space inside the box, before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner. 1-1.
Juventus were beginning to show signs of slacking at this point, and it was evident after 54 minutes, when Gianluigi Buffon brought down an opponent inside his area. Immobile stepped up again, converting to put Lazio 2-1 up.
Simeone Inzaghi’s side did not look to relent despite the lead, as they restricted Juventus further, with the Old Lady struggling to find any rhythm as Lazio went home with the win.
