Kalu recovers after collapsing ahead of Eagles v Burundi tie

Samuel Kalu recovers after collapsing ahead of Super Eagles 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group B opener against Burundi during the team’s training session in Alexandria.

The 21-year-old Bordeaux winger who suffered a heart attack from dehydration caused by the heat in the host nation at this time of the year but the Egyptian doctor who saved the life of Nigeria international after he slumps down was identified as Dr Ahmed Rizk.

NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire said "I have been told Samuel Kalu has been stabilized.

"He was taken to hospital for tests and he has been certified okay.

"He was dehydrated, they said. “They told him he needs to be taking enough fluids.”

Kalu broke into the Super Eagles team in 2018 and has scored just once in five appearances for the national team but the Aba-born also finds back of the net four times and two assists in 25 appearances for his French League giants in the 2018-19 season. 

The temperatures hover between 35 and 38 degrees and this has forced CAF to agree to water breaks during matches at the AFCON in Egypt.

The three-time African champions will take on the Swallows of Burundi in their opening game of the competition on Saturday.
