La Liga game week 28 Roundup

La Liga game week 28 kicked off on Saturday, March 18 with 11th-placed Las Palmas shocking Villarreal with a 1-0 home victory.

League leaders Real Madrid on Saturday moved an inch closer to the title after defeating Atheltic Bilbao 2-1 away from home before Barcelona closed the gap with a comeback win over Valencia on Sunday.

Bilbao 1-2 Real Madrid

Real Madrid provisionally opened a five-point lead atop La Liga with a narrow 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Karim Benzema's 25th-minute effort saw the Zinedine Zidane's men take a one-goal lead into the interval.

Bilbao were level in the 65th minute through Aritz Aduriz, but Real Madrid regained the lead three minutes later courtesy of a close-range finish from Casemiro, and that proved to be the winning goal at San Mames.

Barcelona 4-2 Valencia

Barcelona cut their deficit on Real Madrid in La Liga back to two points with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over 10-man Valencia on Sunday.

An action-packed first half at Camp Nou saw Barcelona trail Valencia after Mangala rose highest to head home Dani Prejo's corner before a quick fire response from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi put the home side in front.

Straight after Messi's coolly taken spot kick, former Barcelona Munir El Haddadi brought the visitors back on level with a tidy finish off Jose Gaya's perfect pass that went through Pique's legs.

Two second half goals from Messi and former Valencia man Andre Gomes secured the much needed three points for the Catalans who have now cut Real's lead to two points. Zinedine Zidane's men do have a game in hand.

Atletico 3-1 Sevilla

Atletico Madrid comfortably beat third-placed Sevilla to move within two points of Jorge Sampaoli's side thanks to Antoine Griezmann's heroics

It capped a miserable week for Sevilla after being knocked out of the Champions League by Leicester, who will face Atletico in the quarter-finals.

Diego Godin put Atletico ahead, before Antoine Griezmann scored a rocket of a free-kick and Koke added a third.

Fernando Torres made his return from a head injury, as Joaquin Correa scored a late consolation goal.
