Liverpool beat Arsenal 5-4 on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-final after a 5-5 scored draw in Anfield on Wednesday night.

But Curtis Jones scored the winning spot-kick in the shootout to ensure Liverpool progressed to the fifth round of the tournament.

The visitors had struck three goals to overcome a one-goal deficit at Anfield after Shkodran Mustafi had put the ball in his own net in the opening minutes.

The Gunners defender inadvertently turned in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross in just the sixth minute to put ahead.

But the Gunners soon put pressure on the Reds defense, with Lucas Torreira finishing a loose ball to level.

Gabriel Martinelli then grabbed a brace to continue his rich scoring form as Liverpool struggled to cope.

First the youngster pounced on a rebound off Reds goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher before then finished off a Bakary Saka cross for his second and Arsenal's third.

The home side were all over the place at the back, but was handed a lifeline before half-time when Harvey Elliott was fouled in the box.

Martinelli went from hero to villain as he rushed in to clear before Elliott nicked it past him and was caught by the forward.

James Milner duly stepped up to convert the spot-kick to bring Liverpool within a goal and set up a promising second half.

Divock Origi's goal deep into injury time sent the game to penalties after the Gunners looked to have the game won.
