It is not the best of times for Nathaniel Clyne as he is set to be sidelined for a further three months after the Liverpool defender went under the knife for a persistent back problem. The right-back has yet to play this season and has been slowly trying to work his way back to full fitness. A recent setback prompted the medical team to reassess the defender’s back issue and it was decided he needed surgery. With this sad development, the 26-year-old will not be available until February and is in danger of losing his spot in England’s World Cup squad. England will fly out to Russia in May ahead of their World Cup campaign and Clyne now faces a race against time to convince Gareth Southgate he should be included. On their part, Liverpool will continue to rely on youngsters Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold to fill in for Clyne.
