Madrid derby: Real set for first win at Wanda Metropolitano - FCNaija

Real Madrid is set to get their first win over Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano when they visit on Saturday for their La Liga clash.

The Champions' last visit to the new Stadium ended in a 2-1 defeat during the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals last season.



Defender Stefan Savic is expected to miss the encounter against Real Madrid due to indirect suspension while Resurrección Koke, Filipe Luis and Yannick Carrasco are all doubtful for the tie.


Gareth Bale is expected to miss the game after he experienced a setback on last Thursday, While Keylor Navas and Dani Carvajal have resumed training with the first team and are expected to match the squad.

Raphael Varane is also expected to make a return to the team after featuring for France during the international break against Germany.


Atletico Madrid will be hoping for a change of fortune at their new Metropolitano home, having lost the opening league derbies at the Estadio Metropolitano de Madrid and Vicente Calderon in 1929 and 1967 respectively.

Real Madrid has won more games against Atletico than any other team in La Liga history, coming out on top in 86 of their previous 161 meetings, and they also have more away wins (34) against their rivals than any other side.

Simeone's men won the most recent encounter 2-1 six months ago, but it was not enough to stop the reigning European champions progressing through to another Champions League final with a 4-2 aggregate success.



Atletico Madrid is yet to lose a La Liga game this season, they are on level with Real Madrid in terms of points on the La Liga log but the Bernabeu giants are at advantage base on goal difference.

Atletico Madrid’s last five games have been marred by draws and only two ended in narrow victory for the Capital based team including the game against Qarabag in the Champions League.


The La Liga Champions have experienced a slow start to the season as they have dropped 10 points in their first 11 games having lost two games to Real Betis and Girona and the two draws to Valencia and Levante respectively.

Real Madrid in their last five games, they won three games and lost two games including the defeat to Tottenham in the Champions League.

The Champions were able to bounce back strong after the defeat in the Champions League with a stunning 3-0 win over Las Palms before the international break.
