Man. City 1-3 Chelsea | When will Guardiola beat Chelsea?

EPL By: Jide Alaka | 04/12/2016

No, you are thinking this is rubbish but over the course of the original minutes of football, Pep Guardiola has not gotten a win over Chelsea. He has achieved victory in extra time but in 90 minutes, Guardiola is yet to get the better of Chelsea, as manager of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now at Manchester City. In five matches against Chelsea, he has drawn four and lost once.

It was billed as the contest between two managers, who have brought new things to management and it turned out like that as it really was a compelling spectacle until the melee at the end, which threatened to smear the image of the game that had truly been played at a frenetic pace.

But just like Italy got the better of Spain with less talented players at the European championship – so it happened at the Etihad as Conte marshaled his troops, rode his luck and rode on some naivety from Guardiola.

This loss would not make Guardiola change his ways as he continues to be sucker-punched by savvier managers, who set up to contain his team and then hit them on the break. Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid did the same to his Bayern side in 2014.

While Guardiola has a better set of players, he deployed them wrongly while Conte, despite having to tweak his starting line-up because of the injury to Nemanja Matic had a plan that he trained with before the encounter on Saturday and succeeded in the execution. His irritation was apparent even before the end of the match as he clapped sarcastically at referee Anthony Taylor and then at the end, he refused to shake the hand of fellow Catalan, Cesc Fabregas.

Chelsea, whether under Jose Mourinho and now Conte, have definitely gotten under his skin.
