Man United give surprise response to Young challenge

Manchester United legend Gary Neville slammed the decision by referee Martin Atkinson not to award a penalty against his old side during the Manchester derby against Manchester City on Saturday.

City were trailing 3-2 with around 10 minutes left to play when Sergio Aguero appeared to have been fouled inside the penalty area.

However, referee Atkinson waved play on, as United held on to put City’s title triumph on hold. But Neville could not believe the call and claimed not only should it have been a spot kick, Young could have been sent off.

“It looked a penalty all day long, it was a reckless challenge by Young,” Neville said on commentary.

“He flew into the challenge. Martin Atkinson had a big decision to make but it did look a penalty from up here.

“De Bruyne plays the pass and you think it's perfect. It's a bad challenge from Young. He follows through with his right leg into the shin of Aguero.

“It's not just a penalty, it is close to being a red card as well. United have got away with one there. Young is lucky. (Pep) Guardiola has every right to be incensed.”
