Manchester United mistakenly announced Jose Mourinho replacement after confirming former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be taking over as the interim manager at Old Trafford in a video on their official website, which has since been deleted.

The 55-year-old Portuguese coach was sacked on Tuesday morning after Red Devils were smashed 3-1 by their fiercest rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday which leaves United 19 points behind Jurgen Klopp men in the Premier League and 11 points off the top four and closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table.

Ed Woodward set to bring Solskjaer back to the club until the end of the season after a video released, according to Sky Sports "Solskjaer becomes our interim manager, 20 seasons after clinching the Treble with THAT goal at Camp Nou..."

Solskjaer had been managing Molde but the Norwegian league finished in November and is not due to restart until March and Norwegian appointment could also see the return of Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant, Mike Phelan.

Solskjaer made 235 Premier League appearances for United, hitting 91 goals including the injury-time winner in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
