Romelu Lukaku scored for the first time in a game involving Chelsea as Manchester United came from behind to win 2-1 in a keenly contested Premier League game at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Willian gave Chelsea the lead, but it lasted only seven minutes before Lukaku leveled. Jesse Lingard then came off the bench in the second half to score what proved to be the winner as Jose Mourinho got the better of rival Antonio Conte.

There was always going to be an after-story to this game, but it wouldn’t come until much later in the first half. However, before then, and as expected, it must be said, Chelsea started on the front foot and it didn’t take them long before they registered their first effort on goal, even if off target.

Just four minutes had gone by when a cross-field pass found Marcos Alonso, and the full back wasted no time as he shot a one-time cross across the face of the Manchester United goal, and there it was, when Alvaro Morata hit the ball first-time from point-blank range, but it rattled the crossbar! What an effort that was.

The miss notwithstanding, Chelsea continued to dominate and pegged United backwards, but very little was being created by way of scoring opportunities. In fact, the next real opportunity wouldn’t come until twenty eighth minute, when Sanchez darted into the penalty area to latch on to a pass, and he unleashed a low drive towards the middle of the net, but Thibaut Courtois was alert and denied him.

Four minutes later, the Premier League champions scored. Eden Hazard played a pass to the feet of Willian, and the Brazilian’s shot went in from the near post, much to the embarrassment of David De Gea. The Bues were in the lead.

However, United would get back into the game seven minutes later – and for the first time in his career – Lukaku scored in a game involving Chelsea, whether for or against. After being involved in the buildup, the Belgian was teed up by Sanchez, and his effort went rolling past Courtois. 1-1. Both sides would go into the break level.

The second half started on a much slower pace, as both teams continued to show caution, even though United looked far better in possession that they were in the first half. But the game would stretch to the 68th minute before the first opportunity of the half would be made. Lukaku twisted well to latch on to a perfect pass and produced a first-time half volley from point blank range but Courtois reacted superbly to keep the ball out. What a chance!

But seven minutes later, Lukaku produced a beautiful lofted cross into the box, where Lingard rose high to head the ball into the bottom right corner and beyond the goalkeeper. United lead 2-1.

In the end, it would be Mourinho smiling as United completed the comeback. The win means the Red Devils return to second on the Premier League table, while Chelsea drop to fifth.
