The England international has been a top target for Manchester United as they aim to rebuild their defensive line ahead of the upcoming season.
Manchester United and the La Liga Champions have started talks over a possible deal for the former Lyon defender. The Red Devils are aiming to complete their third signing before the end of the transfer window on August 8 having signed Daniel James from Swansea for £15m and ex-Crystal Palace star Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a whopping £50m.
The Manchester United board is also keeping tabs on Sporting Lisbon star midfielder Bruno Fernandes and also Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
Manchester United will host Chelsea in their Premier League opener at the Old Trafford on August 11.
