Man Utd v City: Score prediction, team news & likely lineups

EPL By: Ikponmwosa Umweni | 23/04/2019

Pep Guardiola's side travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday night for the 178th Manchester derby is all set to be the biggest game of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

Red Devils need a win to get their Champions League challenge back on track following an alarming dip in form, while the only victory will do for Cityzen too if they are to retain control of a topsy-turvy title race.

Team News

Manchester United may remain without Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia and Eric Bailly, with all three having missed recent Premier League games with an injury.

Luke Shaw could return for the home side after serving a two-match suspension that saw him miss the clash with Everton on Sunday.

For City, Kevin De Bruyne is likely to miss Wednesday's affair after hobbling off during their 1-0 victory over Tottenham on the weekend.

David Silva, Vincent Kompany and Benjamin Mendy could all be pushing for starting shirts, the latter missed out on Saturday's game due to poor match fitness after recovering from a long-term injury.

Head To Head

Recent meetings between these two sides have been very evenly matched, with four wins apiece and two draws from the last 10 Manchester derbies.

Man City won the reverse fixture at the Etihad in November, though, and are therefore looking to do the double over their local rivals for the first time since the 2013-14 season.

City are unbeaten in their last three Premier League visits to Old Trafford too, winning the last two including a 2-1 triumph en route to the title last term.

Recent Form

Ole Gunnar  Solskjaer's team put in a dismal performance against Everton on Sunday and look to be struggling for passion and confidence as of late. If the opportunity to dismantle City's title hopes isn't enough to inspire better form, the Norwegian manager may have bigger problems on his hands.

Despite crashing out of the Champions League to Spurs last week, Guardiola's side brushed off the criticism and bounced back against Tottenham in the league this weekend. Although they only just got the win, their recent ability to snatch positive results shows exactly why they have what it takes to go all the way this season.

Having only won two of their last five league games, they face a strong City side that hasn't tasted top-flight defeat since Newcastle beat them 2-1 in January.

Man Utd possible starting lineup: De Gea; Dalot, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw; Herrera, McTominay, Pogba; Lingard, Rashford, Martial

Man City possible starting lineup: Ederson; Walker, Kompany, Laporte, Mendy; Gundogan, Fernandinho, D Silva; Bernardo, Aguero, Sterling

Prediction: Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
