Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic scored to help Manchester United return to winning ways as they progressed to the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.
Lukaku put United in the lead in the first half through a header, before Matic made victory certain with another header late in the game.
Perhaps the criticisms got to Jose Mourinho after all, as United started on the front foot here today, a huge contrast from what was the case at the same venue in midweek against Sevilla.
There was a raft of quick exchanges between the United stars and there was a better urgency to the way they moved the ball, but despite the domination, they failed to create any real chances.
In fact, the first real chance of the half happened in the 32nd minute, and it was against the run of play, as Lewis Dunk peeled away from his marker and got on the end of the corner, but his fine header towards the left post was brilliantly saved by the diving goalkeeper, Sergio Romero.
However, five minutes later, it would be the Red Devils smiling, when Nemanja Matic puts the ball on a plate for Lukaku, who had an easy finish with a header into an empty net. That would be the last piece of real action before they went into the break.
On return, there were a number of quick chances, as in the 51st minute, Pascal Gross tried a curler from the edge of the box, but it slides just wide of the left post. Six minutes later, the Seagulls had another chance. Jurgen Locadia was unlucky with a goal-bound effort from the edge of the box. A brilliant save by Sergio Romero stopped the ball from going into the top left corner.
Those turned out to be the last chances for a while, as Brighton became more adventurous, although United still held sway. And on 84 minutes, the Red Devils would double their lead. Ashley Young sent a cross in and Matic leapt high to connect with it on the edge of the 6-yard box. His close-range header went into the middle of the net and the score changed to 2:0.
That would be it as United progressed to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
