Manchester United 2-0 Derby: Lingard saves United blushes - FCNaija

FA Cup By: Linus Onyeze | 05/01/2018

Manchester United kept it late but got the job done as they beat Derby County 2-0 in the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Friday.

The Red Devils appeared to be in the trenches again when Jesse Lingard – fast turning into an Old Trafford hero – broke the deadlock late on, before Romelu Lukaku made the win safe with the second goal of the night.

It had a torrid festive period for Manchester United, even they beat Everton 2-0 in their last Premier League game and going into this FA Cup tie with Derby, they knew they had to beat the Championship side, who would bring memories of their League Cup defeat to Bristol City.

And the Red Devils got off to a fine start as within the first five minutes of the game, they were presented with a big chance when Jesse Lingard picked up an inch-perfect pass inside the box saw his effort go well over the bar. He should be doing better there.

After that chance and the scare it gave the Rams, they appeared to tighten things at the back, as they failed to give United the spaces they needed to penetrate and the Red Devils wouldn’t have another chance until in the 20th minute, when Marcus Rashford was afforded space inside the box after collecting a pass, but the chance was wasted as his shot went harmlessly over the crossbar.

But it wasn’t all United, as Derby had a good chance soon after, with Marcus Olsson being fed the ball inside the opposing area but his header was comfortably dealt with by Sergio Romero.

And then on 36 minutes, Rashford leapt high to meet a lofted pass inside the six-yard box, but his header only flew onto the right post and away off it!

With the break just around the corner, Paul Pogba had a chance with a freekick, a good effort it was, but the Derby goalkeeper was on hand to thwart the effort as the score remained goalless going into the break.

Unlike the first half, the start of the second half did not have an immediate opportunity as the first chance of the second period came in the 55th minute, when Juan Mata did well to control a poor pass on the edge of the box then shot towards the roof of the net, but the Derby goalkeeper saved again.

Pogba got with a good chance in the 71st minute, but nothing came off it. Rashoford and Lingard also had opportunities to break the deadlock after the Pogba chance, but neither player could find the back of the net at the point.

However, all that would change on the 85th minute when Lingard received a pass and blasted a rocket of an effort into the net. What a player he’s turning out to be, as he once again put United on the front foot.

And just when you would think the game would with that solitary strike, Lukaku made it two when he converted a neat pass by Anthony Martial.

United have thus qualified to the next round.
