Argentina captain Lionel Messi could face a heavy ban from CONMEBOL for his blasting the official after his team was defeated in the COPA America against Brazil.

The Barcelona forward has been urged to apologise for his outburst against the South America football governing body after he levelled corruption allegations against the federation over the officiating.

There are now threats of Messi being hit with a two-year ban for his outburst - and he's been warned CONMEBOL aren't treating the claims lightly.

"I would suggest to Messi to apologise because they are going to shake him with the sanction. The AFA should go out and tell him to apologise for what he said," said Gustavo Abreu, and Argentine lawyer and member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS).
