The 34-year-old played for eight seasons at Chelsea before heading on loan to Real Madrid and he signed for AC Milan the following year. The former Lyon star had been without a club in the last six month after leaving Greece side Panathinaikos in 2016. The midfielder has been training with his old side Chelsea.

Speaking about his move to the South-East Asia country, Essien told the club's official website: "I hope I am the prelude to other world players moving to Indonesia.

"Hopefully this is a good beginning for Indonesian football and also for Persib. Thank you for bringing me here. I'm excited and want to give my best."

Essien is the highest profile signing for Indonesian football since Cameroon World Cup hero Roger Milla and Argentine World Cup winner Mario Kempes played in the country in the 1990s.

The Ghanaian made 256 appearances for the Blues in all competitions where he won the Champions League, two Premier League titles, and four FA Cups during his time in England.

Essien has 58 caps for Ghana during his international career, scoring nine times and playing in two Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup tournaments.
