Mikel Obi recently joined Chinese club Tianjin Teda, becoming one of the superstars to make the switch to Asia.
Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has said captain Mikel Obi and other football stars moving to China only do so for the money, even as he has warned his players to shun the riches of the Far East and remain in Europe.
Rohr has been speaking on the backdrop of Mikel’s move to China, and the interest from the Asian country for Odion Ighalo’s services.Read also: Super Eagles coach threatens Ighalo over China move
The 63-year old German posited that he understands why a player would want to move to China, but warned his stars it is better they remain in Europe.
“Of course it’s always better to play in Europe,” Rohr said of his Super Eagles stars.
“But I can understand that in the last contract, players want to have a lot of money because the career is short and he must try to have a good future for his family.”
It is not only Nigerian players who have moved or have been linked with a move to China, as international stars like Carlos Tevez and Oscar have all recently jumped on the Chinese bandwagon, where they earn megabucks.
Meanwhile, Rohr had earlier warned Ighalo that he risks losing his place in the Super Eagles if he moves to the Far East, as he has several replacements for him.
