The Blazer skipper Luka Modric has blasted English journalists and pundits for underestimating Croatia following their 2-1 victory to reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup final.

The 32-year-old Real Madrid midfielder played a key role in the second half after Kieran Trippier scored a sensational free-kick in the 5th minute to open the scoring at the Luzhniki Stadium on Wednesday night but Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic turning their fortunes and setting up a final with France.

England were favourites to progress to the final after Croatia played out extra-time and penalties twice on the bounce in the knockout stages and Modric slammed his team’s doubters as the victory sent Zlatko Dalic men into their first-ever World Cup final.

The La Liga star told ITV "We proved everything differently that people were talking,"

"Especially English journalists, pundits from television, they underestimated Croatia tonight and that was a huge mistake.

"All these words from them we take, we were reading and we were saying 'OK, today we will see who will be tired.' As I said, they should be more humble, and respect opponents more. That's it.

"We showed again that we were not tired, we dominated the game physically, mentally in all aspects. We should have killed the game before extra time, but this is an amazing achievement for us, a dream come true.

"After such a long time we are in the final, the biggest success in Croatian sporting history. We have to be proud."

Croatia also made the semi-finals in 1998, when they lost to eventual winners France as they hope to revenge that defeat at Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.
