Mourinho lines up shock replacement for David De Gea

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has lined up Sergio Romero as a direct replacement for David De Gea replacement if the deal to Real Madrid falls through.

The Argentine will be promoted to the first team with immediate effect once the deal for De Gea materialises, Romero has filled in well for De Gea in recent games and he has also done exceptionally well in the Europa League as he has helped Manchester United to the finals.

Although Mourinho is reportedly pushing to keep the Spaniard from moving to Real in a deal likely to be worth around £60million, he is satisfied with Romero as a good enough replacement to stop him dipping into the transfer market.

Big names such as Jan Oblak have been linked as possible targets for the Red Devils ahead of the summer, but it now looks like Romero has earned his chance to take the number one spot, according to The Sun.

Having been understudy to De Gea in his two years at Old Trafford, Romero has managed just 27 games for the club in all competitions so far, though he’s rarely put a foot wrong when called upon.

Louis van Gaal initially signed the experienced shot-stopper as De Gea looked close to moving to Madrid in 2015 before the deal fell through late on, but now he may finally be ready to step in as the Spanish giants come back in for their long-term target.
