Bayern Munich captain Thomas Muller has explained why the Bavarians fall to Real Madrid for the second time in two seasons after the 2-2 draw in the Champions League semifinals at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

Muller refused to attribute the failure to qualify for the final to the referee after they failed to get a goal to seal a place in the final in Kiev.

Keylor Navas was in sparkling form, something the forward paid tribute to.

"We played much better than in the first leg," Muller told reporters post-match.

"The referee did a good job, we didn't lose because of him.

"Keylor Navas was great, he saved Real Madrid on many occasions."

Bayern missed some of their vital players for the return leg of the encounter, the likes of Arjen Robben, Arturo Vidal, Jerome Boateng, Kingsley Coman and Manuel Neuer were all missing.

Real Madrid also eliminated Bayern Munich in the last season Champions League.
