Nigeria will square-up against South Africa in the quarterfinal stage of the AFCON tournament in Egypt in a bid to secure a place in the semifinal on Wednesday at the Cairo International Stadium, here are details you need to know before the much-anticipated encounter between The Super Eagles and The Bafana Bafana.

TEAM NEWS:

NIGERIA:

The Super Eagles have no injury or suspension worries going into this clash against South Africa.

SOUTH AFRICA:

The Bafana Bafana just like their opponent has no injury or suspension concern ahead of the tie against Nigeria in the quarterfinals.

HEAD TO HEAD:

The two teams have played 14 times with the Super Eagles having a better head to head, Nigeria won seven times and drew five while South Africa claimed two victories in those encounters.

The Eagles have won the two previous AFCON meetings between both teams, including a 4-0 victory during the group stage of the 2004 edition.

The last time the nations met was in 2018 when they drew 1-1.

NIGERIA:

Gernot Rohr’s men have stepped up their game since the shocking defeat against Madagascar that saw them dropped from top of the Group B to the second spot.

Their last game against Cameroon saw the went ahead and fall behind with a goal just and they were able to put a fight back to win the tie 3-2 to grab a spot in the quarterfinal of the tournament.

The Super Eagles have progressed beyond the quarterfinals in their last five AFCON appearances and head into Wednesday’s clash with three wins from their last four matches.

SOUTH AFRICA:

Stuart Baxter’s men have put behind them their slow start to the tournament as they knocked out the host Egypt with a 1-0 scoreline in the second round of the tournament.

South Africa matched Egypt in most of the contest and claimed a win against one of the tournament favourites.
