Nigerian Players Wrap: Awoniyi, Aina & Oshoala on target

Nigerian players playing abroad for featured for their various club over the weekend with Taiwo Awoniyi, Ola Aina, Asisat Oshoala and Alex Iwobi all on target in their various clubs in Europe. 

The countdown 2019 AFCON is getting more intense and Nigerian players across the globe are doing their bit to help boost their chances of making the party for this summer tournament in Egypt.

So Fcnaija will take you round the top leagues across the world for a rundown of how Nigerian players fared this past weekend.

Italy 

Super Eagles defender Aina scored his first Serie A goal of the season for Torino who beat William Troost Ekong’s ten-man Udinese 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The 22-year-old star who is currently on a season loan deal from dethroned Premier League Champions Chelsea powered in a brilliant header in the 31st minute to secured maximum points for The Maroons

Aina was subbed off for Lorenzo De Silvestri in the 90th minute in his 20th appearance in the Serie A season.

Troost-Ekong: former Gent center-back was on from start for Udinese to finish and was cautioned in the 86th minute of the defeat.

Belgium

Awoniyi: Liverpool loanee scored his third Belgium Jupiler goal for Royal Excel Mouscron who defeated his former side KAA Gent 2-1.

Nigerian striker failed to score in 16 league matches in the first round of the league for Gent before let him go in the winter transfer window.

England

Iwobi: The Super Eagles star matched his last term’s tally of three goals when netted at Huddersfield Town and It was a well-taken volley and that should inspire him to score more goals going forward.

Wilfred Ndidi:  Nigeria international was in action for Leicester City in the Premier League as they lost 3-1 to high flying Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at the Wembley stadium.

Despite playing all 90 minutes of the encounter, Ndidi could do nothing about his team’s loss to the Spurs but his compatriot Kelechi Iheanacho was a second-half substitute as he was brought on for Rachid Ghezzal in the 72nd minute.

Iheanacho has only managed to score once for the Foxes in the 2018/2019 league season providing five assists while Ndidi has scored twice so far this term.

John Obi Mikel: Super Eagles captain once again featured for 90 minutes for Middlesbrough in the 1-1 scored draw with Leeds United at Riverside Stadium. 

Oghenekaro Etebo; former Warri Wolves midfielder was on the losing end in Stoke City 1-0 loss to West Brom in the English Championship clash at B365 Stadium 

Semi Ajayi: The Rotherham United defender was in action in the entire duration at the New York Stadium after his side were held to a 1-1 scored draw as Josh Windass cancel Clark Robertson opener.

Spain 

 

Oshoala: The Super Falcons star scored on her Barcelona debut at Rayo Vallecano as her new team stayed second on the league table on the back of this 4-0 win on the road.

It was a dream start for Oshoala and a lot more is expected of her during her loan spell from her Chinese club.

Kenneth Omeruo: Chelsea loanee posted a good performance for Leganes who spanked Real Betis 3-0 in a Spanish La Liga clash on Sunday and 2017 Afcon was yellow carded in the 53rd minute of the encounter.

Turkey 

Henry Onyekuru played 90 minutes for Galatasaray who beat Anthony Nwakaeme’s Trabzonspor 3-1 on Sunday in Turkey.

Nwakaeme provided an assist for Hugo Rodallega to draw Trabzonspor level nine minutes after Mbaye Diagne had scored the opener from the spot for the home team, Galatasaray.

Younes Belhanda’s brace in the second half secured the win for Galatasaray.

Onyekuru has scored nine league goals in 20 appearances since he arrived on loan from Everton in the summer.

Nwakaeme, who is on a four-game goal drought has scored four times in 14 league games. His last goal was against Rizespor on the 23rd of December, 2018.

Galatasaray are currently second in the Super Lig table while Trabzonspor dropped to fifth position.

Portugal 

Nigerian midfielder Obiora Nwankwo was a minutes substitute for Boavista in their one-nil win over Santa Clara in the Portuguese Primeira Liga on Sunday.

Nwankwo came on for Alberto Bueno in the 88th minute of the match to solidify the team’s midfield.

Kuwait 

The Sunshine stars product scored on his competitive debut for Al Nasr as they shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw against Al Salmiyah on Saturday afternoon.

Al Nasr came away with one point from the Thamir Stadium when Adeniji restored parity in the 94th minute.
