A Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) referee Bethel Nwanesi was beaten after the game between Remo Stars and Bendel Insurance on Sunday in Sagamu, Ogun State.

Remo Stars were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Bendel Insurance after Charles Omokaro opened the scoring for the Benin base team in the 53 minutes before Victor Mbaoma equalised for the home side 26 minutes later.

According to reports, the home supporters attacked the center referee because they were not impressed with the way the game was handled and let their frustrations known at the completion of the encounter.

It was the opening game of the season for Remo Stars and Bendel Insurance who recently gained promotion from the lower division to the NPFL and they both met in the NNL Super 8 tournament.

This is the second incident happening in the league after Plateau United fans attacked during a defeat to Heartland as the dethroned NPFL Champions was fined and banished to Ilorin by League Management Company (LMC).

No decision has been made at the time of this reports as we await a full investigation and possible disciplinary actions with the NPFL set to continue with midweek games as Remo Stars travel to Minna to tackle Niger Tornadoes.
