Paris Saint-Germain forwards Neymar to miss 2019 Copa America on home soil after rupturing a ligament in his ankle during Brazil's 2-0 friendly win over Qatar in Brasilia.

The 27-year-old world most expensive who was stripped of the Selecao captaincy in May limped off after 17 minutes in the encounter and he misses opening their campaign against Bolivia

Neymar was taken to hospital for a scan after being helped off the pitch by members of the Brazil support staff, having appeared to twist his ankle.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed the news in a statement, "After suffering a sprain in his right ankle during Wednesday's game against Qatar, Neymar was evaluated and subjected to complementary imaging tests that confirmed a ligament rupture in the ankle.

"Due to the seriousness of the injury, Neymar will not have the physical conditions and sufficient recovery time to participate in the Copa America Brazil 2019.  As of this Thursday, the technical committee of the Brazilian National Team will begin the definition of a substitute.

Brazil coach Tite, who on Monday described the forward as "indispensable" but not "irreplaceable" in the team, initially believed the injury would not be "very serious".

Everton's Richarlison had put the hosts ahead after 16 minutes and Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus added a second eight minutes later as the hosts are attempting to win South America's continental tournament for the first time since 2007.
