Manchester United two-goal hero Marcus Rashford says his target and that of his team-mates is to make sure they don't lose their grip on the second spot after the Red Devils moved five points clear of the men from Merseyside Liverpool on Saturday.

Rashford who was making his first start since Boxing Day scored with two strikes from the left side in the first half to put the home side in front. Liverpool pulled one back through Eric Bailly own goal from a bizarre near-post flick and despite a late onslaught by the visitors, Man United held on to bag all three points at Old Trafford in a Premier League early kick-off fixture.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Rashford said: "These are always big games. It is very tight battling for second position and we want to make sure we get that spot.

"It is partly about patience but you have to take your chance when it comes. My first touch was actually a bad touch, I couldn't finish it in my stride.

"I didn't know Gareth Southgate was here! It was nice that he was here to watch but there are a lot of players in contention. He keeps in contact with us and let us know where we are at." said the youngster

Manchester United will now shift focus to Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash against Spanish opponent Sevilla at Old Trafford while are not in action until Saturday, March 17, 2018, when they welcome Watford to Anfield.
