Real 4-2 Atletico: Costa sinks Madrid in a classic match

Diego Costa broke the deadlock in the opening minute after he comfortably best Real Madrid centre-backs to slot in the goal.

Real Madrid had much of the ball possession but remained toothless in the attack as Atletico Madrid remained determined in the back-line.

Marcelo remained a threat to the Atletico defence in the opening twenty minute.

Karim Benzema equalized for Real Madrid in the 26th minute after he converted a cross from Gareth Bale from the right wing, Marco Asensio almost doubled the lead but his effort went narrowly off the post.

The game remained undecided after the first half as the first 45 minutes ended in a stalemate.

The second half begins with Real Madrid seeking to get the second goal while Atletico Madrid is waiting to get the right counter-attack.

Asensio was replaced with Luka Modric in the 56th minute while Atletico Madrid substituted Antoine Griezmann for Correa.

Sergio Ramos got the second goal for Real Madrid after Juan Fran fouled in the box 63rd minute.  Benzema almost scored another but Jan Oblak was equalled to the task.

Rodrigo was substituted for Vitolo in the 71st minute in a bid to add more fire power to the attack, Dani Ceballos was thrown in for Casemiro after the Brazilian appeared to have received a knock in the 74th minute.

Costa scored the second for the night after Marcelo brought back a ball that almost went out of play in the 79th minute.

Lucas Vazquez was brought in for Isco in the 83rd minute, Thomas Partey was thrown to replace Lemar in the 90th.

Marcelo missed a last-minute kick that would have given Real Madrid the win.

The match went into extra time with Real Madrid still maintaining much of the ball possession, Atletico was more defensive.

Niguez Saul scored a volley for Atletico Madrid after Real Madrid sloppy play in the defence. Borja Mayoral replaced Toni Kroos.

Real Madrid conceded the fourth goal after a beautiful play from Costa for Koke to tap in.  Costa was also replaced in the 108th minute for Jimenez.
Atletico won the game 4-2 in a classic match between the two city's rival.
