Few teams have managed to win the European Cup three or more times in a row since its inception in 1955 before it was rebranded in 1992 to be called the Champions League.

Real Madrid, Ajax and Bayern Munich remained the only teams in the history of the tournament to have won the game more than three times or more in a row.

Real Madrid dominated the early stage of the tournament as they defeated the likes of Stade de Reims, Fiorentina, Milan, Stade de Reims, and Eintracht Frankfurt to claim the first five trophies of the tournament spanning from 1955-1960 before they were dethroned by Benfica.

Ajax was the next to dominate at the European stage when the Dutch team won the trophies on three times in a row as they defeated Panathinaikos, Internationale and Juventus to claim the title within 1971-1973 before Bayern Munich knocked them off the throne.

The German Champions went on to dominate for the next three years having defeated the likes of Atletico Madrid, Leeds United and Saint-Etienne within the year 1974 -1976.

Since Bayern Munich feat of winning it three times in a row, no team has managed to win it three times in a row up till date.

The current Real Madrid squad is more can be compared to the teams of the past that won the Champions League on numerous occasions in that the competition is more competitive now than before, considering the fact that more investors have come into the game as it is seen as a business venture than just mere sport.

Under the old format, many teams do not have the economic power to compete with the European powerhouses.

Since the format of the tournament changed to Champions League it no team has been able to manage to win it back to back but Real Madrid broke the jinx and claim the attained the feat of winning it when the Los Blancos defeated Atletico Madrid and Juventus respectively in the last two final of the Champions League.

Real Madrid is arguably the best team in the World after winning the eight trophies in two seasons under the management of Zinedine Zidane, The team has been able to defend the Champions League but has not been able the dominate the La Liga as Barcelona remain the team to beat in Spain.

Zidane’s attention is more on the European scene than the domestic scene but Barcelona has been to hold a grip on the La Liga and also in Champions League having won four Champions League and eight La Liga in the last 17 years.

Real Madrid is gunning for the third Champions League title in a row after defeating Juventus 3-0 in the first leg of Champions League quarter-finals which show more reasons why they are more dominant in Europe than the La Liga.
