The exit of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo from the World Cup has sent a shocking wave to all their fans respectively after the failure to help their countries past the second round of the World Cup.

Messi and Ronaldo were looked upon by their respective teams to be the leader and the focal points of the team which will be the main weapon at their disposal to wreck down other their opponents but the reverse was the case as they crashed out.

Messi was all Argentina had and most of their key passes and the team’s general gameplay came through the Barcelona maestro and with the spot eye on him it was difficult for him to go past two or three defenders at a go as the markers ensured a total lockdown on him.

Argentina opening game in the World Cup against Iceland was a typical example of the type of what Messi experienced all through the campaign and his movement was severely restricted with the ball and it affected the game plan of coach Jorge Sampaoli as they game ended in a draw.

Messi and his teammates hope they can make for the draw against Iceland when they face Croatia in their second game.

Croatia came into the game as the group leader having won their first game against Nigeria and the Blazers know that a win against Argentina will guarantee them a place in the knockout stage. So in a bid to actualize that they continued from where Iceland stopped as they ensured they shut down the supply from Argentina midfield to forwards and in doing so Messi was once again kept silent as the Luka Modric and his teammate had a better side of Argentina and seal their qualification to the next round in a ground style.

The pressure kept mounting on Messi especially the pressure to deliver the World Cup for his country, up against the Albiceleste is the game against Nigeria it was a make a break game for Messi, knowing fully well a draw will send them parking because the Super Eagles of Nigeria had three points going into this game having defeated Iceland in their previous game.

Messi wasted no time in the third game against Nigeria to give Argentina the lead as he was able to ease the pressure on his team in that game, though Nigeria fought back, Argentina was able to seal their qualification to the next round after a late minute goal from Marcos Rojo.

Argentina weakness was totally exposed against France in the second round they did not only mark Messi out of the contest but were able to explore the weakness in the Albiceleste defense line as the Argentine defender was unable to defend a fast counter-attacking game that was France main style of play and whenever France get to the defense of Argentina they are almost getting a goal.

That is the weakness Nigeria failed to explore during their clash, Gernot Rohr failed to apply the same tactics he applied during the friendly game that saw Nigeria scored four goals and he in the World Cup he opted for a defensive play that gives the Albiceleste less defensive duty as they controlled the entire game.

Portugal failure in the World Cup was also similar to that of Argentina, Fernando Santos built the team around Ronaldo though the Real Madrid man was able to give a remarkable performance against Spain in their opening game scoring three goals in the first game.

The game against Morocco he was alive again as he scored the only goal of the game in the opening four-minute but against Iran, he was not on the score sheet.

With Ronaldo unable to get the against Uruguay Pepe stepped into his boot but Uruguay ensured they got the job done after Edinson Cavani brace sealed the victory for La Celeste.
