Roma 0-0 Atletico Madrid: No victor, no vanquished in Rome

Champions League By: Linus Onyeze | 12/09/2017

Atletico Madrid began their Champions League campaign with a goalless draw at the Stadio Olimpico in Italy against Roma.

First Half

There weren’t too many chances created in the opening exchanges, with the first real chance of the match coming in the 32nd minute, as Radja Nainggolan released a powerful first-time effort from the edge of the box which went in the direction of the bottom left corner of the target, but the keeper leapt like a salmon to deny him.

And then shortly afterwards, a big chance went begging as a simple pass from Kevin Strootman left Edin Dzeko with just the keeper to beat inside the box, but his shot went agonisingly just past the left post, and that would be the last real piece of action in the first 45 minutes.

Second Half

Just like the first half, no real chances were created early on, with the first real opportunity coming in the 57th minute, as Luciano Vietto had time and space inside the box after picking up a neat pass, but his shot towards the middle of the goal was easily saved by Alisson

Atletico then had another chance, Angel Correa got inside the penalty area and sent a powerful shot that almost ended inside the net. The keeper was alert and makes a good save.

In the end, there was nothing to separate both sides as it ended as it began – goalless.
