SCHALKE VS MAN CITY: Team news, line-ups & predictions

Champions League By: Iseghohi Odianosen | 19/02/2019

Schalke will entertain Manchester City in the Champions League second round at the Veltins Arena in Germany on Wednesday, here are details you need to know before the commencement of the clash.

TEAM NEWS:

SCHALKE:

The home team will be without Steven Skrzybski, Alessandro Schopf and Benjamin Stambouli, they missed the game last four games for Schalke due to injuries.

Breel Embolo has been a long term absentee following his fractured foot and would miss the clash against the Premier League Champions.

Breel Embolo (foot) is a long-term absentee, while Benjamin Stambouli (cheekbone), Alessandro Schopf (knee) and Steven Skrzybski (hamstring) have not featured since the 2-2 draw at Hertha Berlin last month.

MANCHESTER CITY:

Manchester City has no fresh injury worries ahead of this game and Benjamin Mendy was able to train with the rest of the squad.

The French international has been sidelined for the past few months but he has returned on time to help the team in the knockout stages of the competition.

HEAD TO HEAD:

Schalke and Manchester City are facing each other in a third different European competition after also meeting in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1970 and the UEFA Cup in 2008.

Manchester City defeated Schalke 5-2 in the semi-final of the first of those competitions and went on to win their first and so far only European trophy, beating Gornik Zabrze 2-1 in the final.

More recently, the Citizens claimed a 2-0 triumph in Gelsenkirchen in the UEFA Cup group stage more than a decade ago.

RECENT FORM:

SCHALKE:

Schalke has performed well below expectations this season and can only hope to keep this tie close and head to Etihad Stadium in three weeks' time with a shot at progressing.

Domenico Tedesco’s men have not been at their best so far, they have only recorded one win in five games in the domestic league.

MANCHESTER CITY:

The visitors have been in great form this season, the Cityzens are firing all cylinder at the moment as they aim to retain the Premier League title, though in final of the Carabao cup and in quarterfinals of the FA Cup in the local scene.

PREDICTION:

Schalke 0-2 Manchester City
